About Nannas Farm

We established Nannas Farm in the beautiful Southern Highlands, south of Sydney, in 2022. We were lucky enough to have 15cm of snow shortly after we arrived which was stunning and also confirmed that this is a perfect environment for Scotland's shaggy beltie breed.

We follow regenerative farming practices (kinda means that you're focussing on growing the soil health, and the grass and animal health will follow) as best we can. Research has shown that one of the most effective ways to steward the land is to allow cattle to do most of the work for you (and yep, it's also being a lazy farmer haha).

TBH, we first looked into belties (called oreos in the US) 'cause they're so pretty. But we came to appreciate that they are very efficient foragers ie they munch on everything, not just perfect pastures like Maccas' well marketed breed. This varied diet is better for the environment and makes for a tastier steak! They are also a very gentle breed which helps with our low stress handling.

Why Nannas Farm beltie beef?

Our first focus with our cows is to keep them them calm and healthy as we believe that happy cows make happy steaks. It's always a sad day when we have to send one off, so we ensure that they have an awesome life until then so they only have one bad day in their 3 years.

Our boys and girls are only ever fed grass. It's what their rumens (cow stomachs) are designed to eat and it gives our customers a much healthier and flavoursome meal.

The cattle on Nannas Farm are always given about 3 years to forage and chill. (Our oldest cow, Christmas, is 18yo. She's now retired and living out her days in bliss). This compares to only 15 months for commerical herds. Not only does this extra time give them a better life, it significantly improves the flavour profile.

Bon appetit!
