A Long Overdue Update from the Farm
First things first — thank you for your patience. We've been a little quiet on this end, and honestly? That's because we've had our heads down doing the unglamourous but deeply satisfying work of building for the future. Oh, and also because we sold out last season. Thank you, genuinely, for that.
So let's catch you up.
Spring Drop: The Highs and the Hard Bits
This past Spring brought us a largely healthy drop of 12 calves, which had us over the moon. There is nothing quite like that burst of new life on the farm — wobbly legs, curious eyes, and a lot of very proud mums.
But farming keeps you honest, and we lost one little fella along the way. It shook us more than we expected, as these things always do. You never quite get used to it. We've taken the time to sit with that, learn from it where we can, and carry on with a little more gratitude for every healthy animal in our care.
Say Hello to Patrick
Now for the news that has us genuinely excited about next Spring. We'd like to introduce Patrick — a champion Belted Galloway bull, and one of the most charming fellows we've hosted at Nannas.
We are incredibly lucky to have a generous neighbour who has lent us Patrick's services, and from what we can tell, Patrick is very much enjoying his time with the ladies. Belted Galloways are a hardy, wonderful breed, and if Patrick's credentials are anything to go by, next Spring's drop is shaping up to be something special. Watch this space.
Summer Calves: Two Down, Three to Go
Summer has been busy in the best possible way. We've welcomed two beautiful, healthy calves already, and we have three more arrivals imminent. There is a particular kind of suspended excitement that comes with waiting on calves — checking in at odd hours, that quiet thrill of not quite knowing when the moment will come. We're in that phase right now, and we wouldn't trade it.
Building Better Pastures
While the herd has been doing its thing, we've been quietly transforming what's underneath them.
Our big focus this Summer has been improving our pastures for a broader forage mix — more diversity in what our animals are eating, which makes for healthier, happier cattle. Alongside that, we've been doing a lot of work to improve drought tolerance in our pastures, because the Australian climate doesn't always play nicely and we want to be ready for whatever comes.
Perhaps most importantly, we've been investing serious time and energy into feeding the soil biology. Healthy soil is the foundation of everything we do — healthy pasture, healthy animals, healthy food on your table. It's slow, unglamorous work, but it's the work that matters most and we're proud to be doing it properly.
What's Next
With the infrastructure work done, the pastures improving, and Patrick working his magic, we are genuinely excited about what the coming season holds.
With a dry-ish Spring and Summer, we’ve held off opening for beef orders until the cattle are in prime condition. Watch this space in the coming weeks.
As always, thank you for being part of this. Your support last season meant the world to us and it's what keeps us going on the long days.
More soon. 🐄
